REFERENDUM
was an
interactive sculpture consisting of six plexi ballot boxes, three egg
crates, recycled paper "ballots," laser printed wallpaper, moveable
walls, and Brooklyn Museum visitors. Each installation measured 48"x 72" x 36" and
was placed site-specifically in two locations in the museum as part of
our larger making ourselves visible
project.
REFERENDUM (2010) polled
visitors to the Brooklyn Museum's lobby with, “Do you call yourself a
‘feminist’?” and "Do you believe in equal rights for women?"
Then, visitors to the museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist
Art were asked to respond to the question, “Do political movements
bearing the same name have to retain some of their predecessors’
principles in order to be visible in their contemporary moment?”
"Do you call
yourself a feminist?" received 302 "YES" answers and 334 "NO."
"Do you
believe in equal rights for women?" was answered with 324 "YES" and 13
"NO."
"Do political
